"Red" Wins Charleston Race Week

Published April 22, 2015

CHARLESTON, S.C. — On the final day of racing at Charleston Race Week, “Red” completed their clean sweep, taking two more first place finishes. Racing was the tightest yet. The wind ranged from 8-to-12 knots throughout the two races sailed.

In the first race, Brad Kauffman’s “Mummbles” rounded the windward mark in first, but “Red” went on to regain the lead in the first downwind leg. “Mummbles” was called over the start line early in the second race but got back into second place.

Shane Hughes, boat captain on “Red” said, "The racing has been really good. I think the score line doesn’t really reflect the closeness of the racing. We were behind quite a few times and really had to struggle to get back and win the races.”

Adam Esselman, owner of “Still Messin’,” which placed 5th overall, said he had a great first experience with the Farr 280. He became interested in the boat since the Farr 280 sponsored Charleston Race Week last year. His team improved steadily throughout the week with better starts, tuning and maneuvering.

By the last day, he said, “We could have definitely been in the top three. I think that’s what makes it exciting for future regattas – to take what we learned, make some crew adjustments and get back out there and put ourselves in the money.”

“It was just an awesome experience to get out on the boat, start to mess around with it, get used to it and see how powerful and how awesome the boat really is,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a class out there right now that has a boat that’s like this.”

Hughes said, “Certainly, I think the fleet is improving and we’re improving – that’s the other side of it. I think we’re learning a lot about the boat – the rig, the sails.” The “Red” team is currently planning on participating in the the next Farr 280 class event, Block Island Race Week, from June 21 to 26.
